The Importance of True Repentance
Text: Hosea 5:15-6:6 Date: 7-5-26
Truth: True restoration always comes from genuine repentance and wholehearted devotion to God and His word. Do you desire a fake outward religious life or true worship before God?
But the Lord desired inward change. Burnt offerings were worthless at this point, as all they did was soothe their consciences into being somewhat spiritual, all the while giving their devotion to idols and their bodies in prostitution. Instead of showing a feigned love, God called for loving each other and loving the Lord in this verse. God desires mercy and knowledge over sacrifices and offerings. God desires sincere devotion over outward sacrifice.
Application: God had enough of outward rituals. What else would someone who is living in a secular manner do to smooth over their conscience than to offer outward forms and observances? Man is good at making himself feel good by doing some kind of outward obeisance to God. But religious activity is no substitute for repentance and loving God.
2. God’s rejection of the “repentance” (Hosea 6:4-5)
Application: And compared to the clouds and dew in relationship to the sun, this judgment is pictured as the sun itself. As constant as the morning sun and its piercing light was the assurance of God’s hand against them. Just like the sunrise, God had plainly and repeatedly declared through His prophets that this chastisement was coming, so the nation would not doubt its source. That was God’s grace.
3. God’s desire for real repentance (Hosea 6:6)
Application: Once the nation puts itself back into a place of allegiance to God and not idols, the Lord will pour out blessings like a rainstorm, and the earth will be watered in prosperity. Someday, Israel as a nation will realize the magnitude of the desire for dependence on Jehovah.
Application: Let this be a lesson to us: do not presume on God’s grace. He loves to rain down His blessings on His people, but He will only do it through a transformed heart. True repentance is measured by a full heart change and not by mere words on our lips. God will extend His grace and restore us if we acknowledge our sin before Him.
4. The nation’s future repentance (Hosea 5:15)
Explanation/seek: The Lord will leave for a season, but He will not be gone forever. That’s grace. That’s God giving His people a future opportunity to repent if they seek Him with all their heart. Hope can be held onto despite the oncoming judgment.
Conclusion
How has God’s grace changed you? How have you responded since you became a Christian? Perhaps your life is more lived in the outward religious motions. Your heart has grown cold towards God’s grace. You know your life isn’t what it should be. Restoration begins when a person genuinely repents, and God, in His grace, loves to restore His children!
